Every fall LSU will introduce a new ornament creating a series that will be inspirational and fun to collect. We hope that you enjoy this inaugural ornament and start collecting today.
About the inaugural ornament:
In 2010, LSU celebrates its 150th anniversary, or sesquicentennial. This ornament, featuring the Memorial Tower, helps commemorate this milestone.
One of the first structures completed on the LSU campus, the Memorial Tower, or campanile, was built as a memorial to the 1,447 Louisianans who died in World War I and whose names are inscribed in the four bronze plaques within the rotunda. Theodore C. Link, the campus's original architect, designed the 175-foot tall tower as a memorial, but also as Louisiana’s “Gateway to Learning.” The Memorial Tower also acts as the University’s timepiece as its bells chime every quarter hour throughout the day and evening, including the playing of LSU’s Alma Mater at noon.
The arch featured on the ornament is the doorway of Foster Hall. Completed in 1923, this building is named for Murphy J. Foster, who served as governor of Louisiana from 1879-91. Foster Hall originally served as LSU’s cafeteria, but now houses the Museum of Natural Science. Visitors to the museum can view LSU’s first tiger mascot, Mike I, as well as the exhibits highlighting Louisiana’s wildlife, ecosystem, and archeology.
All of the proceeds will be directed to our new Campus Beautification Fund (CBF). With the opening words “under stately oaks and broad magnolias,” our Alma Mater acknowledges the grace and beauty of this campus. LSU's landscaping was called "a botanical joy" in its listing among the 20 best campuses in America in Thomas Gaines' The Campus as a Work of Art. Whether it is renewing flower beds, planting or pruning our oaks, developing educational walkways, instilling in our campus family a love for our green space, or easing LSU’s traffic flow, the CBF can provide funds necessary for campus enhancements that state funds cannot.
